Miracle of Birth: The Stages of Labour

The journey of childbirth is one of the most remarkable and profound experiences a woman can go through. At GKM Hospital, we understand the importance of providing comprehensive care and support to expectant mothers as they traverse the various stages of labour. In this blog, we will walk you through the stages of labour, shedding light on what to expect during each phase and the care you’ll receive at our dedicated maternity facility.

Stage 1:

Early Labor

The first stage of labour begins when you start experiencing regular contractions, which are often mild and irregular at first. During early labour, your cervix will start to dilate and thin out (efface). Contractions become more frequent, lasting about 30-45 seconds and occurring every 5-30 minutes. This is the time to stay relaxed, hydrate, and rest as much as possible. Our experienced staff will be there to monitor you, answer any questions, and guide you through pain management options, which may include breathing techniques and comfort measures.

Active Labour

Active labour marks the second stage, characterized by more intense and regular contractions. Your cervix will continue to dilate and efface, reaching around 10 centimetres. Contractions are longer, about 45-60 seconds, and come every 3-5 minutes. If aren’t at our hospital already, this is when you should head to our hospital. Our team will provide support, ensuring you’re comfortable, hydrated, and informed throughout the process. Pain relief options, such as epidurals or natural pain management techniques, will be discussed, and we will closely monitor the baby’s well-being.

Transition Phase

Transition is often described as the most intense and challenging part of labour. Contractions are strong, lasting about 60-90 seconds and occurring every 2-5 minutes. This is when the cervix completes its dilation, and your body prepares for the baby’s descent into the birth canal. At GKM Hospital, we emphasize continuous support during this intense phase.
We offer various pain management options, including epidurals, to ease your discomfort. Our maternity team will closely monitor both you and your baby’s well-being, ensuring a safe and healthy delivery.

Stage 2: The Delivery

The second stage of labour is characterized by the baby’s descent through the birth canal and the actual birth. This stage varies in duration, with first-time mothers often experiencing a longer second stage. Our highly skilled healthcare professionals will guide you through this stage, ensuring proper positioning, coaching during pushing, and monitoring the baby’s progress. We encourage skin-to-skin contact and bonding as soon as your baby arrives, promoting a warm and loving environment for you and your newborn.

Stage 3: Placental Delivery

After the baby is born, the placenta (afterbirth) must be delivered. This stage typically occurs within 15-30 minutes of the baby’s birth. Our team will continue to monitor your health and guide you through this process. We ensure that the placenta is delivered safely, and any potential complications are addressed promptly.
The stages of labour can be both exciting and challenging, but at GKM Hospital, you can expect unwavering support and top-notch care throughout your birthing experience. From early labour to the final moments of placental delivery, our team is committed to ensuring the health and well-being of both you and your baby. We offer a range of pain management options, a comforting environment, and an experienced staff to guide you through this incredible journey.
